Introduction / History

The Dinka people have traditions, most notably polygamy, that could potentially spread AIDS out of control. A story in the December 24, 2003 issue of International Herald Tribune showcased Chief Akot, who had 76 wives. This is certainly an extreme example, but his praxis is nothing unique in Sudan.

For the last 50 years, the Dinka lifestyle has been challenged and changed, primarily by formal education at colleges and universities. The ongoing civil war that ended in their region in 2005 also brought about significant change and displacement. These things have left the Dinka as a people unsure of their place or future.

The gospel of Jesus has yet to significantly influence Dinka society, and with the challenges of polygamy and civil war, there is an even more urgent need to seek and implement strategies that will be effective. Everything from infrastructure work to Bible translation to physical provision needs to be carried out.

Prayer Points

Pray that God would send courageous and adaptable servants to live and work among the Dinka.
Pray that, first and foremost, the Dinka people will come to understand God's love for them, and respond with faithful obedience. Pray for God's Kingdom to come to the Dinka people in such a way that AIDS will be eliminated among them and neighboring peoples will give God the glory.
